Davis Coster (ext. 1125) began as Associate Director of Youth Ministries in the fall of 2017. Along with Emily Newman, he works to inspire the next generation of believers and guide them as they develop into life-long disciples who worship God, serve others, and love their neighbors.

Davis is a fourth generation member of Hayes Barton who grew up in the church and actively participated in the youth program. After graduating from Appalachian State University with a degree in public relations, he worked in various communication and management roles while volunteering as a youth leader. Davis has always had a passion for working with young people, and now uses his creative and engaging gifts to promote fellowship and spiritual growth among the youth at Hayes Barton.

In addition to his work with our youth, Davis is an avid sports fan and enjoys movies, music, and television. He is a dog lover and comes home everyday to furry friends DiNozzo and Raley.

Laurie Harrell (ext. 1113) joined the staff of Hayes Barton in 2007 after having already been a member since 1997. She enriches the spiritual growth of our elementary children (1st through 5th grades) through Sunday School, faith formation, Friday Night Fellowships, and the Time with the Young Disciples in Traditional Worship. Laurie is also the Founder, Executive Director, and a teacher at Wee Care, a nonprofit, free preschool for low income children in the Raleigh area.

Before joining Hayes Barton’s staff as Director of Children’s Ministries, Laurie studied psychology at NC State, received a teaching certificate from Meredith College, worked as an elementary teacher in Wake County for 7 years, and taught in our Weekday Preschool for 3 years.

Laurie and her husband, Dave, have two boys and two girls together and an adorable dog, Max. She and Dave enjoy fishing, football, exercise, and travel.

Karen Skaggs (ext. 1122) joined Hayes Barton UMC in 1998 and joined the staff in 2017 as Director of Preschool Ministries. Her mission is to lead the preschool children in the early phase of their faith journey. Karen guides the children through Sunday school, Spiritual Academy and fun activities throughout the year that foster spiritual growth in the church. She strives to make the beginning years of worship an exciting time of discovery.

Karen is also a teacher at Hayes Barton UMC Preschool. Her teaching journey began in 2009 when her daughters attended the school. Karen enjoys working with all ages and serves as an assistant to the Preschool director. She grew up in Raleigh and is married to Eric. They have two beautiful daughters, Olivia and Morgan
