S2S Stories: Rise Against Hunger

Last Saturday about 100 members of the HBUMC congregation gathered in Holroyd Hall (Casper would be proud) to package 20,000 meals as part of our church-wide Scattered to Serve mission outreach. The meals packaged were with the Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now) worldwide initiative to end hunger by the year 2030.

Participating in the meal packaging event were a variety of church members ranging in ages from four to eighty-four years; and it also included ten members of the Starnes Class and for some families, three generations. This is the third time we’ve packaged 20,000 meals as part of Scattered to Serve; and since 2008 HBUMC has participated or hosted events that packaged a total of over 300,000 meals. Most of the meals have been shipped to Haiti or Uganda, and some to other food deprived populations around the world.

We would like to thank all those who participated in this truly meaningful and very rewarding experience. Most of who had participated several times before. In fact when we asked for a show of hands of volunteers who had not done this before only about 5 or 10 people raised their hands. The packaging process went so well, we ended up finishing 20,000 meals in a little over two hours. A very special shout out and thank you to the volunteers that showed up at 8:00am to help unloading and setting up the equipment. It meant that were able to start promptly at 9:00 after the commissioning service.
