Outreach Pathway Partnership with Rise Against Hunger in Uganda Yields Positive Results
In 2013, Hayes Barton began a partnership with Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now) in Uganda to help children and families there make a better life for themselves. Conditions for many in Uganda are bleak and, for many more, quite dire. Two in three Ugandans live on less than two dollars a day, and one in ten on less than $1.25. Uganda is now hosting nearly a million refugees, with one of its refugee camps being the world’s largest. Drought is now threatening even greater food insecurity. Recently, Rise Against Hunger (RAH) staff travelled back to Uganda to look at progress to date and reported on some of the outcomes of this powerful partnership:
The animal husbandry project (which raises pigs) outside Kampala provides a steady source of income to pay faculty and staff of King Solomon’s Junior Academy, a primary school of more than 500 students who otherwise would probably not be able to attend school.
The micro-lending project has provided small loans or grants to 12 women to empower them to become self-sufficient and support their children’s education.
Construction of a well at St. Michael’s Primary School in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, where no water had been available previously, makes it possible for children to stay at school for the full day—and serves local families as well.
The book drive with our partner, the YMCA, yielded hundreds of books for the library at King Solomon’s Academy.
Also, Hayes Barton has continued packaging thousands of life-sustaining meals with RAH, including 40,000 planned in 2017 alone. (Our total now stands at 370,000 meals since 2008—and counting!)
Going forward, the RAH/Uganda/Hayes Barton Partnership Team will continue to deepen this relationship, focusing on careful program design, sustainability, and collaborating with a strong in-country partner to achieve maximum impact. Empowerment is the key as Hayes Barton comes alongside children and families with love and support on their journey out of poverty.
